73-year-old woman killed while crossing busy Charlotte roadway

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A 73-year-old Charlotte woman died Thursday after police say she was struck by a car while trying to cross the street.

Charlotte Mecklenburg Police were called to the intersection of Sharon Amity Road and Milton road about 12:35 p.m. Thursday afternoon.

Bernice Williams Whitmire, 73, had been hit by a car as she tried to cross the street.

"She was transported to the hospital with critical injuries," said Capt. Chuck Henson about the victim's condition at the scene.

Family members say she died of internal injuries.

"She just didn't deserve to die the way she did..it's hurtful," Whitmore's son said. "Everybody is going to take a loss from this. The little kids she looks out for at the bus stop in the morning..the little one's gonna hurt. The big one's gonna hurt."

Many relying less on police, more on personal protection from concealed weapons

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - It's a sign and sound of the times. Chances are someone you know is packing heat. "Most people are scared of something, they hear a bump in the night, they read a crime report, the Lancaster incident."

It might sound cliche, but the reality for many people is that police just can't be everywhere at once. That leads many to places like Carolina Sporting Arms where Donald Ingram is noticing a trend in business.

"Most people don't just want to buy a gun, they want to have it at their disposal; either hidden in their car or on their person when they go shopping somewhere," Ingram said.

To meet that need, Ingram's store offers classes to obtain concealed carry permits. It's a class that is filling up everyday. Numbers obtained from the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office certainly point to that.
